Hollister 'Riot' Poster

Product Description

The Hollister riot occurred at an American Motorcyclist Association sanctioned motorcycle rally in Hollister, California from July 3-6, 1947. More motorcyclists than anticipated converged upon the small town to watch the annual rallies as well as to socialize and drink. A small number of motorcyclists were riding their bikes through the streets and consuming huge amounts of alcohol. This was all too much for the already stressed police force of Hollister to handle and by the end weekend Hollister was littered with thousands of beer bottles. About 50 people were arrested along with some 60+ reported injuries. This photo, taken by Barney Peterson of the San Francisco Chronicle and published in Life Magazine, shows a drunken man sitting atop a Harley-Davidson motorcycle holding a beer bottle in each hand with debris surrounding his bike. This story made up the basis of the plot of the 1953 film "The Wild One", starring Marlon Brando. As a dramatized version, the movie worked only to further bring the riot into public light and with motorcyclists portrayed as outlaws. This striking glossy black and white poster is ideal for framing and measures 24" wide x 36" tall.
